My Wife, Wine, and the Never-Ending Quest for the Perfect Semi-Sweet White

Written by:

Let’s be honest, folks. Wine. It’s a thing. And for many women, it’s the thing. My wife? She’s a card-carrying member of the “Love White Wine, Must Be Sweet” club. I, on the other hand, am a red wine devotee, the drier the better. It’s a delicate balance in our household, like a yin and yang of fermented grapes.

Now, I’m not saying all women only drink wine. I know, I know, generalizations are bad. But let’s just say, in my experience, the Venn diagram of “Women” and “Enjoying Wine” has a significant overlap. It’s practically a circle. And my wife? She’s right there in the center, swirling her glass and contemplating the subtle notes of… well, something sweet and white. Honestly, sometimes I think she could identify a wine just by the sound of the cork popping.

We’ve even ventured into the world of “Make Your Own Wine” places. It’s a fun experience, like a science experiment you can drink at the end. We’ve tried everything: whites, reds, fruity concoctions, even sangria (which, let’s be real, is basically wine punch). And Wine Club. That right a Club for Wine. We get together with other wine lovers all bottle our wines together, and share among the wines, eat, drink and socialize. Its all round good time. Side note, my wife signs us up for wine club, I go ’cause I get my beer at the same place on occasion, but that’s a story for another post in the future. (I do usually enjoy wine club.)

The real challenge, though, wasn’t making the wine. It was remembering which ones she loved. You know how it is: you find a fantastic bottle, she raves about it, and then, a few months later, it’s vanished from her memory banks like a politician’s promise. Tragic, I tell you.

So, being the supportive and incredibly organized husband that I am (humblebrag!), I created a Wine Journal. Yes, you heard that right. A journal. Specifically designed for recording all the crucial details of her wine adventures. Name, taste, vineyard (if applicable), and even space for little tasting notes. It’s a game-changer, folks. No more wine-induced amnesia! (You can actually find it on Amazon – check out the link below! Shameless plug, I know, but it’s genuinely useful.)

Now, back to the burning question: Why do women love wine so much? Is it the ritual? The relaxation? The subtle flavors dancing on the palate? Maybe it’s just the socially acceptable way to unwind after a long day. Whatever the reason, it’s a powerful force.

And what is a good wine, anyway? For me, it’s something bold, dry, and complex. For my wife, it’s something… well, the opposite of that. But that’s okay! Variety is the spice of life (and the wine cellar).

And what about a wine for a “manly man”? Please. Real men drink whatever they enjoy. Whether it’s a delicate rosé or a robust Cabernet Sauvignon, if you like it, drink it. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Speaking of enjoying wine, let’s talk food pairings. A crisp white with seafood? Classic. A rich red with a juicy steak? Heaven. A sweet white with… well, my wife would probably pair it with just about anything. Me? I’d go for something like a dark chocolate to balance the sweetness.

So, here’s my suggestion: pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine (whatever color, sweet or dry – no judgment here!), grab your Wine Journal (hint, hint!), and relax. Take a moment to appreciate the subtle nuances of the grape, the history behind the bottle, and the simple pleasure of a well-deserved drink. And if you happen to be a woman who loves sweet white wine… well, you’re in good company. Cheers!
