My Name is Michael Bond (No, Not That Michael Bond!)

It’s a funny old world. My name is Michael Bond, and yes, I sometimes get the question. “Are you that Michael Bond?” The one who wrote about a certain marmalade-loving bear from Peru? The answer, alas, is no. But it’s a question I get often enough that I’ve learned to embrace it with a smile. Sometimes I’m flattered – who wouldn’t want to be associated with such a beloved character? Other times, I have to chuckle and say, “Hold on a minute, I’m not anywhere near old enough to have penned those classic tales!”

The truth is, I’ve been a Paddington Bear fan for as long as I can remember, even before I realized I shared a name with his creator. It’s a delightful coincidence, and one that makes me feel a little bit connected to the magic of Paddington’s world.

For those who might be unfamiliar with this iconic bear, let me introduce you to Paddington Bear!

Paddington is a small bear who travels all the way from Darkest Peru to London after an earthquake destroys his home. He’s found at Paddington Station (hence his name) with a suitcase, a duffel coat, and a label that reads, “Please look after this bear.” He’s taken in by the Brown family, and his adventures in London, filled with marmalade sandwiches and well-meaning chaos, have captivated children (and adults!) for generations.

Michael Bond, the actual Michael Bond, created Paddington in 1958. His inspiration came from a teddy bear he bought his wife for Christmas, which they named Paddington. He started writing stories about the bear, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Over the years, Michael Bond wrote numerous Paddington books, including classics like:

  • A Bear Called Paddington (1958)
  • Paddington Helps Out (1961)
  • Paddington at Large (1962)
  • Paddington Abroad (1964)
  • Paddington at Work (1966)
  • Paddington’s Garden (1972)
  • Paddington’s Christmas (2009)

Paddington’s charm has also translated beautifully to the big screen. We’ve been treated to several movies, including:

  • Paddington (2014)
  • Paddington 2 (2017)

These films have brought Paddington to a new generation, with their heartwarming stories and delightful visual effects.

For those of you with young children who are just discovering the joy of reading, I highly recommend introducing them to Paddington Bear. Michael Bond’s stories are timeless, filled with humor, warmth, and valuable lessons about kindness and acceptance. They’re the perfect way to spark a love of reading and introduce your little ones to a truly special character. And who knows, maybe they’ll even meet another Michael Bond along the way! Just don’t ask me for any marmalade recipes. I leave that to Paddington.
