Valentine’s Day. A week away. A time for love, romance, and… mild panic for some folks. For me? It’s exciting, sure, but not because of the heart-shaped frenzy. Nope, the real party for me is the day before Valentine’s Day. That’s right, folks, it’s my birthday! So, while everyone else is stressing over roses and reservations, I’ll be basking in the glow of another year older and wiser (and probably slightly wobbley from birthday beer and vodka).

Now, Valentine’s Day… it’s one of those “holidays” that makes you wonder. Is it really a holiday? There are no government-mandated days off, no parades (unless you count the mad dash to the florist on February 14th), and definitely no holiday pay. It’s more like a societal pressure test disguised as an opportunity to express your undying love. And boy, do people get creative (and spendy!).
Flowers, chocolates, teddy bears holding edible underwear… the classics! Lingerie? Sure, why not? Nothing says “I love you” like a strategically placed piece of lace. (Just kidding… mostly.) I mean, who doesn’t want a teddy bear clutching some… ahem… confectionery undergarments? It’s the perfect blend of cuddly and… well, you get the idea.
Valentine’s gifts run the gamut from sexy to playful, sweet to… well, let’s just say “interesting.” A card can be lovely, a unique, thoughtful gift is always appreciated, and sometimes, plain is just fine. Let’s be honest, though, how many guys are grabbing something—anything—on their way home from work that day? (I’m not judging, just observing.)
Personally, I think flowers are lovely, but my wife’s take is that they’re just extra work. She’s not anti-flower, just pro-low-maintenance. Which, fair enough. Why have something beautiful that you then have to worry about keeping alive when you could be, you know, living?
The thing is, shouldn’t every day be a little bit like Valentine’s Day? Showing your loved ones you care shouldn’t be confined to one specific 24-hour period. But hey, if you are going to celebrate, this year it falls on a Friday! That means a whole weekend of lovey-dovey bliss (or at least a weekend of not having to go to work).
Just chilling out, sharing some laughs, forgetting about the daily grind for a night, and making some new memories… that can be the best gift of all. And speaking of gifts… don’t forget! I mean, really don’t forget. You’ve been warned. Because trust me, forgetting Valentine’s Day is a much bigger offense than forgetting someone’s birthday… even if it is the day before. Just sayin’.
