My Obsession with Perfectly Organized Spices: You’re Gonna Love It (Said No One Ever)

Written by:

Okay, folks, let’s talk about hobbies. You know, those things you do in your spare time that are supposed to be relaxing, fulfilling, maybe even cool? Some people knit. Others build model trains. Me? I alphabetize my spices. And I don’t just alphabetize them, oh no. That would be amateur hour. We’re talking perfect organization. We’re talking microscopic label alignment. We’re talking… well, you get the picture. My wife calls it “obsessive.” I prefer “dedicated.”

It all started innocently enough. I was making chili, couldn’t find the cumin (naturally, it was behind the paprika, which, let’s face it, is a culinary show-off). In a fit of spice-induced rage, I dumped the entire contents of my spice drawer onto the counter. And then, something magical happened. I saw… order. Potential. A rainbow of flavor, waiting to be tamed.

Three hours later, my spices were arranged alphabetically, by type (ground, whole, dried leaves, etc.), then by color, then by perceived “heat level” (don’t judge, you don’t know my system). I even invested in tiny, perfectly uniform jars. My wife came home, took one look at the meticulously arranged spice rack, and sighed. “You know,” she said, “you could have, like, cured cancer in that time.”

She has a point. Probably. But have you ever opened your spice drawer and felt a wave of pure, unadulterated joy? I have. And let me tell you, it’s better than finding a twenty dollar bill in your old jeans. (Okay, maybe not better, but close).

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “This guy is nuts.” And you’re probably right. But here’s the thing: having this weird, niche hobby has actually been good for me. It gives me a sense of control in a world that often feels chaotic. It’s a creative outlet (yes, spice organization is an art form, fight me!). And, most importantly, it’s something that’s just for me.

So, what’s the point of this rambling, spice-infused post? It’s this: find a hobby. Any hobby. Maybe it’s something “normal” like playing guitar or running marathons. Maybe it’s something completely bonkers like competitive thumb wrestling or collecting vintage bottle caps. Doesn’t matter. Just find something that makes you happy, something that you can lose yourself in, something that makes your wife roll her eyes and mutter about the wasted potential for cancer cures. Because, at the end of the day, a little bit of weirdness is what makes life… well, spicy. (See what I did there?)

P.S. Okay, confession time. I don’t actually alphabetize my spices. It sounds kind of… intense, right? (No offense to any spice organizers out there, you do you!) But I do have other hobbies, slightly less… eccentric ones, that I’ll be sharing about in future posts. In the meantime, I want to hear from you. What are your hobbies? Let me know in the comments below!
