It’s Thursday – Valentine’s Eve – February 13 (aka My Birthday… Yawn)

Happy almost-Valentine’s Day, everyone! Oh, and also… it’s my birthday. Yes, that Thursday, February 13th. You know, the day before the day of love, the day before I start hyperventilating about finding the perfect heart-shaped, ethically sourced, artisanal chocolate (kidding… mostly).

What makes February 13th so special? Well, besides the obvious (it’s my birthday!), it’s… Thursday. Seriously, folks, it’s just another day. I get it, birthdays were a thing when I was younger. Cake! (I am actually not a big fan of cake) Presents! The unadulterated joy of being another year closer to driving! But now? Meh. It’s just… Thursday.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I appreciate the well-wishes, the Facebook notifications (thanks, algorithm!), and the forced enthusiasm. But let’s be real, after a certain age, birthdays become less about jumping castles and more about existential dread.

I’m sharing my special day with… well, probably a lot of people. I haven’t checked the official birthday registry (is there such a thing?). I’m sure some famous person was born today. Probably a cat. Or maybe it was Abraham Lincoln. (Quick Google search… Nope, Lincoln was February 12th. See? I’m already learning things!) But, incase you also have a birthday today, let me be the next one to wish you a Happy Birthday!

And what is the big deal about birthdays, anyway? We’re all just hurtling through space on this giant rock, aging at roughly the same rate. One year older, one year closer to… well, you know. (Let’s not dwell.) People always ask what I want. Honestly? I have no clue. Surprise me. With a winning lottery ticket. Or a time machine. Either works.

How old am I today? Let’s just say I’m one year older than I was last year, and one year younger than I’ll be next year. Mind. Blown. I’m either on the cusp of a mid-life crisis, or I’m already in the thick of it and just haven’t noticed. Is “one year wiser” a thing? Debatable. I’m definitely one year more experienced at avoiding telemarketers.

It is just another Thursday, albeit one with slightly more cake. I’ll celebrate with family and friends, because, hey, free food. And the cool thing is, thanks to the recent snow/ice storm, I got to skip the morning commute! Birthday bonus!

Birthdays… we all have them. They’re a thing. Moving on.

Seriously though, thank you for all the birthday wishes. I genuinely appreciate it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start prepping for tomorrow. Valentine’s Day looms. My wife deserves all the love and chocolate (ethically sourced, of course). Wish me luck. I’m going to need it.
