Remember rabbit ears? No, not the furry kind hopping around your garden. I’m talking about those glorious antennas that perched atop our TVs like metallic antennae, desperately trying to pull in a signal strong enough to deliver us from boredom. Adjusting them was an Olympic sport – a delicate dance of twisting, turning, and praying to the TV gods for a clear picture. Fast forward to today, and I’m drowning in a sea of channels and streaming services, yet still somehow manage to utter the age-old lament: “There’s nothing to watch!”

Oh, how times have changed! We’ve gone from three channels (plus PBS, if you were lucky) to thousands. Remember when the highlight of your week was circling the TV guide with a highlighter, planning your viewing schedule like a general plotting a military campaign? Now, we’ve got On Demand, DVRs, and cloud storage, allowing us to watch what we want, when we want. I still have a box full of blank CDRWs somewhere, a relic from the brief era where we all thought we were geniuses for recording shows off the TV. Who needs physical media when you’ve got the cloud, right? (Unless, of course, the internet goes down… then you’re just staring at a very expensive paperweight).
And speaking of the internet, let’s talk about streaming. Cutting the cord was supposed to save us money, wasn’t it? Now, I’m subscribed to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Tubi, Pluto, and my local cable company (for sports, obviously). I think I’m paying more than I ever did with basic satellite! It’s like a hydra of entertainment – cut off one head (satellite), and two more spring up (streaming services). Don’t even get me started on IPTV. It’s like the Wild West of television, and you never know what you’re going to get.
But hey, at least we have choices! Want to binge-watch “Stranger Things”? Netflix has you covered. Craving some classic “Seinfeld” humor? It’s probably on five different platforms. Need to catch up on “The Crown”? Well, you know where to find that. We live in a golden age of television, a glorious era where the biggest challenge is not finding something to watch, but deciding what to watch. It’s the paradox of plenty!
And the devices! We’ve gone from bulky CRT TVs to sleek flat screens that could double as art installations. We watch on our phones, our tablets, our laptops, and even project movies onto the side of our houses (don’t judge). We’re living in the future! Remember when the only way to watch a movie was to go to the video store (and rewind the tape, for the love of all that is holy)? Now, we can summon any movie ever made with a few taps on our screens.

But what about the commercials? They’ve evolved too! We used to groan at the interruptions, now we just fast-forward through them (unless, of course, it’s a Super Bowl commercial. Those are sacred). And let’s not forget the buffering wheel, the bane of every streamer’s existence. That spinning circle of doom can turn the most anticipated moment of a show into a frustrating exercise in patience.
So, tell me, dear readers, how do you watch TV? Are you a streamer? A cord-cutter? A proud antenna owner? What services do you use? What are some of your favorite shows and movies? Let’s compare notes and lament our collective inability to choose something to watch, despite having literally thousands of options.
And now, I must bid you adieu. I’m off to scroll through my endless list of streaming options… again. I’m sure I’ll find something eventually. After all, the remote is mightier than the cord.

Or maybe its time for a new streaming device – Amazon has you covered
