Okay, folks, let’s talk about something that’s been plaguing me, something that haunts my dreams, something that… well, okay, maybe mildly annoys me: dual sinks. Specifically, dual sinks in the bathroom. I get it in kids’ bathrooms. Two little rugrats brushing their teeth simultaneously, spitting toothpaste at each other – pure chaos, but at least somewhat practical. But in the master bathroom? The sanctuary? The place where I go to escape the aforementioned rugrats? WHY ARE THERE TWO SINKS?!

Seriously, home renovation shows, I’m looking at you. You’d think dual sinks were some kind of magical elixir of domestic bliss, the key to a happy marriage. “And here we have… drumroll please … DUAL SINKS! Because nothing says ‘I love you’ like separate basins!” They unveil them like they’ve just discovered the lost city of Atlantis, gleaming under the carefully positioned spotlights. Meanwhile, I’m at home, staring at my perfectly adequate single sink, wondering if I’m missing out on some crucial element of adulting.
Do people actually use both sinks at the same time? I mean, really think about it. Are you and your partner regularly engaged in synchronized teeth-brushing ballets? Are you both so dedicated to your skincare routines that you require separate washing stations at precisely the same moment? Or, like most of us, does one sink become the designated “place where I leave my contact lens case and that random bottle of face wash I bought on a whim” while the other one gets, you know, used?
The official purpose of dual sinks, I believe, is to prevent arguments. “Honey, you’re splashing water on my side!” “Well, maybe if you weren’t using all the counter space for your elaborate hair-styling tools…” (Yes, I’m projecting. A little.) But honestly, wouldn’t a simple “I’m going to brush my teeth now, you can go first” suffice? Or, dare I suggest, gasp, taking turns? Is that too radical?
And let’s talk about counter space, or the lack thereof. You sacrifice precious real estate for this second sink. Where am I supposed to put my extensive collection of bath bombs now? Where will my rubber duck army stage their epic battles? These are important considerations!
I’m starting a petition. A petition to bring back the single sink. A petition to reclaim our counter space. A petition to finally understand the true purpose of the second sink (other than to collect dust and provide a home for forgotten toiletries). Who’s with me? Or, at the very least, can someone explain this dual sink phenomenon to me without resorting to the phrase “increased property value”? Because I’m pretty sure a slightly larger bathroom rug would achieve the same thing, and I’d have room for my rubber duckies.
