Home Repairs Day: Transition Strips, New Locks, and a Sense of Accomplishment

Written by:

Today was “Home Repairs Day” at my place. It’s always satisfying to tackle those little projects that have been nagging at me for weeks (or months!). First on the list: replacing some worn-out transition strips between the hardwood and carpet. These little guys are surprisingly important for keeping things looking neat and preventing tripping hazards.

Next up, the pièce de résistance: installing a brand new Teeho digital entry deadbolt! I ordered it from Amazon, and while the installation wasn’t exactly rocket science, it did require a new hole saw kit. A quick trip to Canadian Tire sorted that out, and soon I had a shiny new lock gracing my main entry door.

Why Home Maintenance Matters

Staying on top of home maintenance isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about preventing bigger, more expensive problems down the line. Think of it as preventative medicine for your house! Here are a few things to keep an eye on:

  • Regular Checks:
    • HVAC System: Check filters monthly, schedule annual maintenance.
    • Plumbing: Inspect for leaks, check water pressure.
    • Electrical: Test GFCIs regularly, replace faulty outlets.
    • Roof: Inspect for damage after storms, check for loose shingles.
    • Appliances: Clean out dryer vents, run dishwasher through a cleaning cycle.
  • Unexpected Issues:
    • Water Damage: Be prepared for leaks with a good sump pump and consider water sensors.
    • Power Outages: Have a backup power source for essentials (flashlights, battery packs).
    • Pest Control: Keep an eye out for signs of pests and have a plan for prevention.

The Sweet Taste of Accomplishment

After a day of productive home repairs, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of satisfaction. Everything feels a little bit neater, a little bit safer. Now, it’s time to kick back, crack open a cold one (or your favorite beverage), and enjoy the fruits of my labour. At least until next weekend and I am sure the wife will have a new list for me.
Happy homeowning (or renting)!
